Antabuse is used for treating alcoholism.
Buy generic antabuse because it's a drug that is often marketed as a cure for "pain or fatigue" rather than a way to treat chronic fatigue syndrome.
"For a lot of people with chronic fatigue syndrome it's not about pain or fatigue, drugstore coupon 20 off it's the and fatigue lack of sleep," said Dr. Alan Blok, chief of the neurology division at University Hospitals Cleveland's Wexner Medical Center.
In March, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of naltrexone in treating a rare form of the illness known as "myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)" — the first time a drug to treat this specific diagnosis had been approved.
Myalgic encephalomyelitis occurs when the immune system attacks central nervous and causes inflammation the release of proteins that trigger symptoms fatigue and headaches.
The drug is marketed under brand name Buprenex. The FDA allowed it to be marketed in the United States as a treatment for two other rare illnesses — chronic fatigue syndrome, caused by a virus, and fibromyalgia.
The drug is a new class of anti-nausea drug called a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID, Blok said.
In the United States, first FDA-approved use of the drug was in people who had serious gastrointestinal problems known as ulcerative colitis. Now, many patients with chronic fatigue syndrome are also prescribed the drug for nausea and other symptoms without ulcerative colitis.
Many doctors continue to prescribe the drug for other indications, including people with nausea from chemotherapy.
"The drug works, and it still works pretty effectively for other things," said Dr. David M. Shaff, chair of neurology at the Cleveland Clinic Health System.
But some patients who have suffered severe complications from their condition are reluctant to tolerate the drug in their bodies, even for a short time.
"All the patients who ask me question in the emergency department, they tell me, 'Don't use this drug,' " Blok said. "They tell me, 'This drug might give me infections.'"
"I am not a big fan of taking this drug," he added.
Some experts say the drugs can cause severe infection and the potential for drug dependency.
"Sometimes people are not responding well to anti-nausea drugs," said Dr. William J. Grier, a professor of medicine and pharmacology director the Pain Medicine Center at University of Florida College Medicine.
"They're kind of like a Band-Aid, where they're supposed Hydrochlorothiazide-lisinopril 12.5 mg-20 mg oral tablet to be all the drugs you need to treat nausea, but they're not all the drugs you need to treat severe pain," Grier said.
Grier, who has studied the use of anti-nausea drugs for chronic fatigue syndrome, said his experience was that "once I stopped the medication, couldn't stay off of it for more than a week. They may not be totally effective, but they are better than nothing."
